Rule-change to encourage performance of modern music at OPC 2013

Dear prospective competitors

We have decided, in consultation with our Artistic Director, to make a slight change to the rules of the competition.

Pianists falling into the amateur category (category 2) will now be allowed to use scores during their performances of modern piano music (20th and 21st Century but excluding works of certain composers including Debussy, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Scriabin).

For the avoidance of any doubt, we would ask that any pianist wishing to perform a modern piece in the competition at any stage get in touch with us for clarification.

We hope that this slight change will not only encourage the performance of modern piano music in the competition but also attract more amateur pianists to enter. Since contemporary music can often be relatively more difficult to memorise, we feel that this restriction should now only be applicable to the pianists falling into the professional category (category 1).

Please do get in touch with us if you have any queries regarding this rule-change. We look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

OPC Directors
